2)
Try to look at more than one room or house.
That way you'll be able to compare the difference in facilities
on offer. However, if you find the right accommodation, don't
delay making a decision to take it...or someone else will!
3) Meet / Speak to your Landlord directly
The person showing you the room may not be the same person
who will maintain the property or whom you'll need to call
out in an emergency. Are they honest and can you rely on them?
4)
Meet the other tenants you'll be sharing with
The relationship you have with the people in your house will
greatly influence your stay. Do you really want to live with
people with whom you dislike and argue with? Would you feel
safe living with these people? If you can't meet the other
tenants, ask your landlord what they are like. If you get
the chance, ask the tenants what your landlord is like, too!
5)
Ask questions about the room/house you're interested in!
Are all bills included in the rent? Will you be charged search
fees by the agent? How close is the house to bus routes and
local amenities? Is there a TV aerial point in the room? Is
the house fully furnished?
6)
Check the cleanliness of the kitchen and bathroom.
If it's in a bad state, why is that? Is there a cleaning rota?
7)
Is the room/house safe?
Is the property fitted with a fire alarm system and supplied
with fire extinguishers? Are the door locks secure?
8)
Make sure you are provided with a written Shorthold Tenacancy
Agreement.
Check the small print. If there's anything you don't understand,
ask! Find out what the motice period is if you decide to move
out.
9)
Tell your friends
When you find the right accommodation that meets your needs,
don't forget to notify your friends, relatives, bank and work
where you'll be living.
10)
Relax!
You've found your ideal accommodation, now enjoy it! Arrange
to go out with the others in your house for a night-out and
get to know the people you'll be sharing the next few months
of your life with.
